MONSTER FAIR: A Halloween-themed funfair will set up shop in Bishop Auckland marketplace this Saturday (October 19) from 11am to 3pm. Attractions will include stilt walkers, face painters, prizes for the scariest dressed child, a children’s carnival and fun fair rides.

BOOK LAUNCH: Author Wendy Robertson will launch her new book, Paulie’s Web, which is based on her experiences being the writer in residence at HMP Low Newton Prison in Durham, at Bishop Auckland Town Hall at 7pm on Wednesday (October 16). The book launch is free to attend.

BLACKSMITH DAY: For £50, visitors to Killhope, the North of England Lead Mining Museum in Weardale, County Durham, can learn how to be a blacksmith on Saturday (October 19). Workshops run from 10.30am until 4pm with the price including lunch, booking is essential on 01388-537505.

GALA NIGHT: The Mighty Wurlitzer Theatre Organ in the New Victoria Centre in Howden-le-Wear, County Durham, will host a gala and awards night on Thursday, November 7, starting at 7pm. Numerous organists will play and there will also be a performance by Northern opera soprano Rachel Orr. Durham county councilor Sam Zair will present awards. Tickets cost £6 from 01388-762467.

POPPY SALE: Handmade poppies are now on sale the Co-operative Funeralcare’s homes in Darlington, Newton Aycliffe, Shildon, Bishop Auckland, Crook, Stanhope, Spennymoor, Ferryhill and Brandon. The poppies have been made by people in the various communities.
