Large-scale disturbance in pub before Benji Bolsenbroek died, police say
A NEW father out celebrating the birth of his son was killed after a large-scale brawl in a Middlesbrough pub, police said today.
Benji Bolsenbroek, whose girlfriend Georgina McGuire gave birth to baby Kianey less than a week ago, was at the Park Hotel on Linthorpe Road celebrating with family when a “large-scale disturbance” broke out.
At a press conference yesterday, Detective Superintendent Rob Donaghy, of Cleveland Police, said: “We know Benji was out celebrating the birth of his son... in the Park Hotel on Linthorpe Road on Saturday night (October 5).
“Inside the Park Hotel a large scale disturbance took place around 0020 on Sunday morning, October 6, and somehow Benji became involved.
“During the incident Benji was assaulted and the involvement of others and the part they played is a major focus of my investigation.”
He said he had clear CCTV footage of the brawl and was confident those involved would be identified.
Mr Bolsenbroek had facial and body injuries and went back to his mother’s house nearby with friends before becoming “very unwell”.
One of his friends or family members called a taxi and he was taken to James Cook University Hospital, where he died soon afterwards.
A post-mortem examination was inconclusive, said DS Donaghy, and pathologists were carrying out further tests to determine the cause of death.
He said the victim’s family had experienced a “rollercoaster of emotions” from the birth of baby Kianey to the tragic loss of Mr Bolsenbroek, and that they were struggling to come to terms with events.
The death is being treated as suspicious or unexplained, rather than as a murder inquiry. An incident room has been set up and anyone with information can call 01642 303202, or Crimestoppers on 0800-555-111.
