Ex-con John completes charity bike ride
3:58pm Monday 23rd September 2013 in News
A REFORMED criminal has raised more than £400 for charity by taking part in a Darlington to Newcastle bike ride.
John Wallace set off from Darlington on Sunday, September 15, with two friends, Craig Hocking and Michael Roddy.
Their efforts have swelled the coffers of St Teresa’s Hospice.
Mr Wallace has more than 170 criminal convictions to his name, but decided to mend his ways after being released from prison.
The 42-year-old, who volunteers for the hospice, said: “I have been in and out of trouble all my life and decided to do something for charity and give back to the community.
“We are thinking about doing the coast to coast ride next year.
“People have asked me ‘can a convict really change?’ and I thought ‘well, of course we can’.”
The three set off from Darlington at 9.30am on the same day as the Great North Run and took three-and-a-half hours to reach Newcastle.
