Ex-wife of man accused of gunning down family in Turkey claims he was a controlling drunk

THE ex-wife of a gardener who shot dead a leading healthcare expert at her Turkish holiday home has claimed his obsession with money was behind the killing.
Ruth McGarry, who divorced Veli Acar three months after finding text messages on his phone from former NHS patient safety manager Anne Bury, of Swainby, near Stokesley, said the murder suspect had closely controlled her life towards the end of their marriage in 2010.
SHOT DEAD: Anne Bury, 56
Ms McGarry made the claims as it emerged Miss Bury, 56, had called police begging for help, in the moments before Mr Acar allegedly shot her several times as she hid in a bathroom of one of the two villas she owned in Dalyan, Turkey.
Turkish police are reported to have received a call from Miss Bury, at 6am on Monday, September 9, after Mr Acar burst into the property where she had celebrated her 56th birthday with a party hours earlier.
Miss Bury’s 24-year-old Newcastle University graduate son, Alex, has told how he was awoken by Mr Acar pointing a pump-action shotgun at him as his mother and grandmother, Cecilia, 87, hid in another room.
Miss Bury told police, who had arrested Mr Acar in the days before the shooting after he allegedly made death threats to him: “Come here, Veli is here, he’s come here. Help us.”
Mrs Bury, of Nunthorpe, Middlesbrough, and her grandson, who are both recovering from gun wounds sustained in the attack, have said the relationship between Miss Bury and Mr Acar was purely one of employer-employee.
However, Mr Acar’s friends and family have claimed the pair first met on a river cruise in 2006 and had an increasingly tempestuous relationship.
A photograph taken at the resort in 2010 has emerged of the couple smiling, with Mr Acar’s arm around Miss Bury’s waist.
Ms McGarry is reported to have been told by Mr Acar that he did not love the former James Cook University Hospital midwife who had taken on a management role for an oil firm in Dubai, but that Miss Bury’s salary would provide him with a better quality of life.
She said: “His obsession with money has destroyed his life and turned him into a killer.”
“He started to become bothered about money and material things.
“He was also drinking every day. All the affection stopped and some nights he didn’t come home.
“He started to become more controlling. I would have to ask permission to go to the hairdressers.”
