MORE than 200 people have signed up for a rare tour of Tynemouth Lighthouse.

The Port of Tyne is opening the iconic building to the public for this year’s Heritage Open Days, from Thursday to Sunday (September 12 to 15)

A tour of Newcastle’s Swing Bridge has attracted a further 150 people.

Susan Wear, Port of Tyne’s Director of Corporate Affairs, said: “We are delighted to be extending our support of Heritage Open Days by providing additional funding this year to ensure that as many people as possible are made aware of this unique opportunity.

“This year the port is proud once again to be joining hundreds of organisations opening their doors to the public.”

Leading the lighthouse tours from the port’s North Pier in Tynemouth is Pier Watchman, David Appleby.

He said: “I’m looking forward to giving people a closer look at the pier and the light, which is fully operational and still provides a vital navigational aid to visiting ships."
