A KNITTED Queen with her corgis, mermaids and Olympic ice skaters will adorn people’s walls throughout 2014 after a local photographer published a calendar featuring knitting from the “Saltburn Yarn Stormers”.

Sarah Browning, a photographer and graphic designer from Brotton, East Cleveland, who designs calendars and greetings cards, claims not to know who the mystery knitters are, but said greetings cards from 2012 which featured the Olympic and Jubilee scenes had sold well so she decided to create a calendar.

The “Saltburn Yarn Stormers” are a group of guerrilla knitters whose work mysteriously appears throughout Saltburn in the dead of night.

Last year they knitted an Olympic scarf which stretched the whole way down the town’s pier, followed by scenes celebrating the Queen’s Jubilee.

This year a scarf with seaside scenes including mermaids, donkeys, seagulls and ice creams appeared along the length of the pier, attracting tourists from all over the region.

The notorious knitters have made national headlines over, and over, with their topical scenes - the Olympics, Jubilee, and a naked Prince Harry.

Ms Browning said her first choice for the calendar was the Queen and her Corgis. Her personal favourite pieces of knitting are the mermaids and also the donkeys, which have “Knit” and “Purl” on their nosebands.

The calendars will be sold in local shops in Saltburn, including the Post Office and Ripping Yarns, the knitting shop.
