FLORAL creations by old hands in the art of arranging went on display in a show staged for the first time, at the weekend.

Durham Flower Show was devised partly to fill the void from the demise of the Durham Horticultural Show, held in the recent past at County Hall.

It was among the victims of local authority cut-backs this year.

In its wake, members of Durham Flower Club decided to stage their own show, at their regular meeting venue, at Sherburn Community Centre.

Despite members being busy helping with the recent Jewels of the North display at Durham Cathedral, which ended last Wednesday (September 4), they quickly turned their attention to the fledgling show at the community centre, in Front Street, Sherburn Village.

It featured a range of interpretive designs in bench and pedestal displays plus a floristry arrangement section, filled with wedding table centres and mother of the bride button holes.

Veteran arranger Kath Dawson said it earned many admiring comments from visitors, even though she hopes to improve on what was on show in future years, if more fresh blood comes on board at the club.

“Like many groups we would very much like to see new members coming to help with events like this.

“It was the first time we’ve staged it and we’re up against other events in the area.

“We are getting on in years and it would be nice if some younger enthusiasts gave it a try and came along.”

The club meets at the centre on the first Thursday each month, from 2pm to 4pm.
