BIDDERS can win an England shirt which Paul Gascoigne wore ahead of his starring role in the Italia 90 World Cup in a charity auction in the memory of the former national side boss Sir Bobby Robson.

Gascoigne handed the number 19 shirt he wore in a warm-up game against Tunisia to England's translator Giacomo Malvermi after the inauspicious 1-1 draw in June 1990.

England's form under Sir Bobby picked up after that, and the side were a post's width away from reaching the World Cup Final.

By then Gascoigne was the star of the tournament - his fame only increased by his tears in Turin.

Now his shirt has been donated by Mr Malvermi to the Sir Bobby's Breakthrough Online Charity Auction.

The sale next month supports the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation, which funds cancer research in the North East, Breakthrough Breast Cancer and cancer services at two Suffolk Hospitals.

The online auction aims to raise £1m for the good causes.

Mr Malvermi said: ''Sir Bobby was a great man and a gentleman of the football world.

''During my time as his translator at Italia '90 I was inspired and overwhelmed by his passion, kindness and above all his great humanity and empathy.

''The fact that so many people in the sporting world and beyond are supporting this campaign says so much about the man and manager Sir Bobby was.

''I loved Sir Bobby and I am honoured to donate my Paul Gascoigne England match shirt to this online auction in aid of such a good cause.''

In 2011 Jose Mourinho donated his Fifa Ballon D'Or 2010 World Coach of the Year Award trophy to the auction, which raised £26,000.

Sporting stars who also donated in 2011 include Sir Alex Ferguson, Josep 'Pep' Guardiola, Andre Villas Boas, Alan Pardew, Arsene Wenger, Lewis Hamilton, Gary Lineker and David Beckham.

Other items in this year's auction include a bowling lesson from Ashes-winning spin ace Graeme Swann, the chance to play five-a-side on England's training pitch at St George's Park in a prestigious tournament and a VIP trip, including private jet, to the Monaco Grand Prix.
