Dame Judi Dench backs calls for remains of Richard III to be buried in York
ACTRESS Dame Judi Dench has backed campaigners calling for the remains of Richard III to be buried in her home city of York.
The Oscar-winning star of Skyfall is to sign a petition asking the Government to ensure the last Yorkist king is reinterred at York Minster, rather than Leicester where his skeleton was discovered during an archaeological dig last year.
The e-petition, which runs until September 24, currently has 28,900 signatures.
In a message to supporters of the campaign for Richard III to be buried in York, Dame Judi’s personal assistant Sue Jennings said: “Dame Judi Dench has asked me to say she would be very pleased to add her name to your petition to have Richard III’s remains buried at York Minster.”
The Plantagenet Alliance, including descendants of the monarch’s family, has secured permission to bring a judicial review against the Secretary of State for Justice and the University of Leicester over the decision to bury his remains in the Midlands city.
They believe he should be buried in York Minster, given his close connections with the city as well as Middleham and Sheriff Hutton - even though the Minster authorities believe Leicester should be the spot.
The original approved plan was to bury them at Leicester Cathedral, near where the body was found, and plans are already well advanced for an interment there next year.
A date for the hearing has yet to be fixed.
