Work to begin on Birtley supermarket
WORK will begin on a new supermarket set to create 250 jobs later this month.
Contractors will start work on the site on Durham Road, in Birtley, Gateshead, on Monday, September 23.
A new 25,000sq ft Morrison’s store will replace a disused Somerfield store and a former council depot.
The contractors will arrive on site on Sunday (September 8) to start preparatory works. This will mean the closure of a car park behind the former Somerfield store.
Developers Morbaine will be meeting businesses this week to discuss the project.
Graham Adams, from the firm, said: “We have been working on this project for nearly two years so to now be starting on site is tremendous.
“We know that local people are very excited by the scheme and the benefits that it will bring to Birtley town centre.”
Birtley has been without a major supermarket since Somerfield closed in 2009. It is hoped the new Morrison’s will be open by Christmas 2014.
