Metro train hits taxi on crossing in Newcastle
A METRO train has ploughed into a taxi on a crossing.
The incident happened at Callerton Metro Station, Woolsington, Newcastle, at 6pm today. (Monday)
The driver of the car was uninjured and there were no reports of anyone on the Metro being injured.
The road between the A696 and Woolsington Road was shut for around two hours as emergency services dealt with the incident.
Northumbria Police said enquiries were ongoing to establish what had happened.
A spokesman for Nexus, which runs the Metro service, said: "It is a police incident. It is their investigation. It was just after 6pm when the collision happened.
"The passengers were removed from the train just after 7pm. There was only one person in the taxi, that was the driver.
"The train has now been removed from the site. We are waiting for the car to be lifted off the track."
He said the Metro service between Newcastle Airport and Kingston Park was currently suspended.
He added: "The investigation will take place as to the exact cause. There was nobody injured on the train."
