Middlesbrough residents warned of 'ironic' telephone scam
5:39pm Thursday 29th August 2013 in News
AFTER complaints of an ironic cold call company, Middlesbrough Trading Standards have issued a warning to members of the public.
The company claiming to be various phone providers have been calling members of the public in an attempt to sell an expensive device responsible for blocking cold calls.
Jim McCluskey, Middlesbrough Council’s Principal Trading Standards Officer, said: “Problems have arisen because consumers appear to have been led to believe that it is a service provided by their phone company, for example BT.
“It isn’t and the device itself, despite claims that it will stop all unwanted calls, in all probability, will not.
“Trading Standards advice, should you be rung by such companies, is to try to ensure exactly who you are dealing with and find out just what it is they are selling and at what cost.”
Middlesbrough Trading Standards have advised those who do not wish to receive unsolicited sales or marketing calls to register with the Telephone Preferences Service, the official recommended opt out register.
