Contest is the icing on the Gospels cake
ASPIRING bakers are invited to join a Lindisfarne Gospels-themed ‘cake-off’.
Participants will be challenged to create sponges, cupcakes, gateaux, buns and other sweet treats with a design inspired by the Gospels or St Cuthbert in an event dubbed The Great Gospels Cake Off.
The entries will be displayed and judged at Durham Farmers’ Market on Thursday, September 19.
Lindisfarne Gospels Durham programme director Keith Bartlett said: “Home baking is extremely popular at present and we thought this would be a fun and imaginative way for people to show what the Gospels mean for them.
“We have had the knitted bible, embroidery, stone carving, paintings, calligraphy, music and dance. Soon we will have inspirational icing and divine decoration.”
There will be various prizes, including a people’s choice award.
The Farmers’ Market will also see the launch of a County Durham Food Charter, under which organisations and individuals will commit to working towards more sustainable, healthy food systems.
