Handy reminder to deter potential shoplifters
A HANDY reminder not to shoplift will face potential thieves in the region.
Bright yellow hands will greet anyone shopping in the cheese, meat, alcohol or beauty aisles in shops across Teesside.
The hands, placed on products considered attractive to thieves, are emblazoned with the message ‘Stop thief, think, this store is monitored by CCTV and shoplifters will be prosecuted’.
The initiative, part of a wider shoplifting action plan, was created by Cleveland Police and will be introduced to several shops, including Superdrug in Redcar.
Manager Tracey Coyle said: “I think they are a good deterrent. Shoplifting can cost us quite a lot because of the things we sell.”
Police and Crime Commissioner for Cleveland, Barry Coppinger, said shoplifting was far from a victimless crime.
He said: "The local community can be affected greatly if shops close, jobs are lost and finances are ruined.”
