A YOUNG triathlete from north Durham has moved up to competing in adult triathlons.
Joel Atkin, 16, from Craghead, near Stanley, is only in his third season, but is already taking on far more experienced competitors.
A typical Sprint Triathlon consists of a 750 metre open water swim, 20k bike ride followed by a 5k run.
In past events he was placed 18th at Leicester, 12th at Stretton Lake in Suffolk, and 14th at Desford, just outside Leicester before finishing in 4th place overall and 1st in his age-group at the Sprint Triathlon at Whitchurch in Shropshire earlier this month.
He has also finished first in his age-group at the Stockton Duathlon Festival and has competed in two Duathlons based at the Silverston Grand Prix event.
His results have come about as the result of hard training through many hours in the pool, on the bike and running.
Joel’s coach, John Richardson, said: “I’ve always been confident that when all three disciplines came together, Joel would put in a great performance and he has proved it.”
For the rest of this season, Joel has two more sprint triathlons and will be running in the Bournemouth Half Marathon.
His father, Mike Atkin, is now hoping for local support to enable Joel to progress to the next level.
He said: “Competing in triathlons is an expensive occupation and for him to continue, I am looking for some more support.
