Mayor of Darlington to officially open South Park outdoor gym amid morning of fun activities
FUN-FILLED sports activities will mark the official opening of an outdoor gym in South Park this Thursday.
Between 11am and 1pm residents are invited along to the gym to enjoy activities such as an egg and spoon race, building a giant tower and launching rockets.
Youngsters are being encouraged to go along dressed as their favourite sporting characters, while visitors can have a go at a free Nordic Walking taster session.
Demonstrations of the gym equipment will be given after its official opening by the Mayor of Darlington, Councillor Charles Johnson.
Mayor Johnson said: “Outdoor gyms are a brilliant way for people to get fit, especially if they don’t enjoy exercising in a gym.
“The Friends of South Park and the Ranger team have done a great job getting funding and consulting with people to find out what they would like and I hope that many people take advantage of the equipment.”
The gym was funded by Friends of South Park who applied to the Dulverton Trust, with support from Darlington Council.
Park users were asked which pieces of gym equipment they would like to have installed and the most popular were a chest press, leg press and an air skier.
