Free street festival attracts crowds
A FREE festival of bank holiday weekend entertainment is underway in County Durham.
Saturday and Sunday saw the Streets Of performers in and around Durham City with the action moving to Barnard Castle on Monday.
Buskers, acrobats, jugglers and daredevils have been wowing crowds with agility, stunts, skills and nerve.
Audiences enjoyed a jam-packed programme of activities at Millennium Place and Palace Green and a series of mini shows were performed in many of the city’s bars and cafes in Old Elvet, Saddler Street and North Road.
Kate James, festival director from Visit County Durham, said: “It has been absolutely brilliant.
“We have had record numbers of people, it is just astounding. The Market Place was overflowing with people and lot of people we have spoken to were here just for the festival as well.
“It has been a really lovely day and we have some great new faces as well as new performers. It has been really nice to see how the crowds have reacted as well.
“It is possibly one of the best line ups we have ever had and the shops, bars and cafes have been rammed. They have been flat out all day.”
An innovative live artwork event, The Big Windoodle, saw talented urban artists turning their attention from walls to windows by creating a temporary collection of striking artworks sited in the windows of shops and businesses across the city centre.
More than ten businesses, including ‘City Attic’ on North Road and ‘East’ on Saddler Street have temporarily donated their window space to artists.
At Crook Hall and Gardens on Sunday a popular series of folk concerts culminated with a live concert by Jenn Butterworth and Laura-Beth Salter.
Visitors to Scar Top in Barnard Castle on Bank Holiday Monday will be treated to an afternoon of entertainment as five performers bring humour, acrobatics, grace and slapstick to the spectacular backdrop of the castle ruins.
Ms James said: “We are taking Streets on the road for the first time ever so it is really exciting.”
The line-up is as follows: 12pm Fanti Acrobats, 12.30pm Kwabana Lindsay, 1.20pm The Reid Show, 2.05pm Reality TV Me, 2.55pm Todd Various, 3.45pm Fanti Acrobats.
