Police probe spate of vehicle arson attacks in Shiney Row and Grasswell early today
POLICE are appealing for information from witnesses after a spate of suspected arson attacks on parked vehicles in the early hours today (Thursday August 22).
Reports were received of four cars and a van being apparently set alight in the Shiney Row and Grasswell areas near Houghton-le-Spring, on Wearside.
All were attended to and dealt with by the fire service.
Police are linking the suspected attacks, in neighbouring Aster Terrace, Blossom Grove and Success Road, all in the Philadelphia area of Shiney Row, and in Hylton Street and Chester Street, about a mile-and-a-half away in Grasswell.
The damaged vehicles were a Vauxhall Astra, Ford Ka, Ford Ka Zetec and BMW 323 cars, and a Citroen Berlingo van.
Inspector Lisa Musgrove, who heads the local neighbourhood policing team, said: “An investigation is underway to identify the people responsible for these fires.
“We’re appealing for anyone who was in the area at the time and saw anyone acting suspiciously or anything out of the ordinary to contact police.
“No-one was injured and the fires were quickly extinguished, but we understand that incidents of this nature cause concern for local people and we have extra officers in the area as part of the investigation, as well as to reassure residents.”
Anyone with any information is asked to contact police on the non-emergency 101 number, asking for extension 69191.
Alternatively, callers can ring the independent charity Crimestoppers, via its freephone line, 0800-555-111.
