Chefs attempt to make as many dishes as possible from one enormous cabbage
A GIANT cabbage is about to give some top chefs a giant problem – as they chase a culinary world record.
Eleven leading cooks are preparing to race against the clock to create as many dishes as possible out of one enormous cabbage.
But the brassica is question should give them plenty to work from - as it already measures more than three feet in diameter and fills an entire wheelbarrow.
And by the time the record attempt talks place – on September 13 – it could well be over five feet wide and weigh in at around the 80lb mark.
The attempt till take place during this year’s Harrogate Autumn Flower Show, itself one of the biggest events of its kind, which runs at the Great Yorkshire Showground from September 13 to 15.
It will start with the first cut of the colossal cabbage by TV chef Stephanie Moon and Gilly Robinson, who are hosting the cookery theatre over the weekend. They will be creating 30 different dishes in 45 minutes.
The rest of the team will then produce 15 dishes each throughout the day with a world-beating target of 105 recipes, all including a portion of the big brassica in a menu that will take visitors to almost every corner of the culinary world.
Show director Martin Fish said: “Our giant vegetable competition has proved to be incredibly popular since we launched it in 2011. One of the big questions many people ask is what it would be like to cook with one of the monster exhibits, so we thought it would be fun for our visitors to find out.”
He added: “We have 11 talented chefs ready to race against the clock and set a new record and, if you ever thought brassicas were boring, the 105 dish menu they have created for us will certainly make you think again.”
