Tony 'The Fridge' runs through County Durham
A MAN who is running from John O’Groats to Lands End with a fridge on his back has raised hundreds of pounds running through a North-East town.
Tony “The Fridge” Phoenix-Morrison, from Hebburn, is fundraising for the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation by attempting to run 40 consecutive marathons in 40 days.
The 49-year-old grandfather set off from just outside Durham at lunchtime today heading south down the A167 towards Rockliffe Hall, in Hurworth, near Darlington.
When he reached Darlington he said he was overwhelmed with the generosity of the people of Darlington.
“It has been amazing,” he said. “Everyone seems to know who I am. I had no idea I had made such an impact to people outside of Newcastle and Gateshead.
“It is extraordinary. People have been so generous. I have raised hundreds of pounds in Darlington alone.
“It has been difficult but I have really enjoyed it. It helps forget about all the aches and pains.”
Tony spent the night at Rockliffe Hall thanks to Middlesbrough Football Club chairman Steve Gibson. He said his extremely grateful for all the help the football club has given him as well.
