A FLOCK of sheep have been safely returned to their field after escaping onto the side of the A1 near Darlington.
Motorists reported the sheep at around 9.15am today (Monday, August 19) between junctions 56 and 57, near Barton, on the northbound carriageway.
A spokesman from the Highways Agency said officers from Barton had imposed a road block for about ten minutes while they ushered the sheep back into the field and fixed a gap in the fencing.
He said the road was all clear by around 9.50am and that traffic was moving freely shortly afterwards.
