Police hunt Newcastle rapist after 19-year-old woman attacked
POLICE are hunting a man who is said to have raped a 19-year-old woman in Newcastle city centre.
The incident took place at 3am on Friday, August 16, in Dispensary Lane, behind the Gate complex.
It is believed she had met the man at Eazy Street, on Westmorland Road, at around 2.40am, and then walked with him around the city centre towards the Gate.
The man is described as being around 24 years old, about 6ft tall, of slim build, with short dark spiky hair, he was wearing a white t-shirt with three-quarter length sleeves and he had orange and white face paint under his eyes and on his forehead.
Police are appealing for anyone who recognises the man or who saw him walking with a woman in a dark coloured dress to contact them.
Detective Sergeant Helen Anderson, from Northumbria Police's Rape Investigation Team, said: "The description we have of this man is very distinctive due to the facepaint, and we are asking anyone who recognises the description or has any information to contact us."
Detectives are carrying out extensive enquiries to trace the person responsible as the investigation continues.
Chief Superintendent Gary Calvert said: "I'd like to reassure people that there is a team of detectives investigating this offence and extensive enquiries are underway to identify this offender.
"There will be a visible police presence in the area, both to carry out enquiries into the rape and offer reassurance to people and give them the opportunity to speak to officers.
"Specialist officers are speaking with the victim to offer her the help and support she needs from our dedicated Rape Investigation Team and the Sexual Assault Referral Centre to ensure she has the utmost support.
"We also have a number of Independent Sexual Violence Advisors available – who provide a link between the victim and the police – from the initial call to the end of a court case. They can also help the victim link in with other agencies and welfare support."
Anyone affected by rape or sexual violence can contact the REACH Sexual Assault Referral Centre for help, advice and access to support services. Call 0191-2219222 - leave a message out of office hours - or go online at www.reachsarc.org.uk where links to other agencies are also available.
