Reward to catch armed robbers
A REWARD of £5,000 is being offered to help catch armed robbers who stole cash from a security van outside a supermarket.
Police were called to Tesco in Chester-le-Street on Sunday, August 4 at 2.30pm after two security guards were robbed while delivering cash to a cashpoint opposite the entrance on North Burns.
One suspect appeared from a bush and struck one of the security guards in the chest with a long blunt instrument and knocked him to the ground.
He then made off with a large sum of cash through some bushes up the embankment opposite the store.
A member of the public gave chase, but was confronted by the suspect and another man who pointed what appeared to be a firearm at him and warned him to "get back".
North-East regional manager for Crimestoppers Dave Hunter, said: “Two men doing their daily job have been left badly shaken by this incident, with one being injured during this robbery, while a substantial amount of money has also been stolen from the scene.
“It infuriates me that people think they can just take what they want and get away with it, which is why I would urge the public to do the right thing and come forward with any information they might have, anonymously.”
The first man is described as 5ft 5ins tall and of stocky build wearing a blue or green coat, and the second is 6 feet tall and of medium build wearing dark clothing. Both had their faces covered.
G4S director of operations Paul Tolhurst, said: "Our cash couriers are the backbone of our business and they have the right to do their job without fear of attack.” Anyone with information can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800-555-111 or through the anonymous online form at www.crimestoppers-uk.org.
