350 jobs to leave Northallerton after Rural Payments Agency confirms closure
NORTHALLERTON has been dealt a massive jobs blow after a Government agency announced it was moving out with the loss of more than 350 jobs.
Workers at the Rural Payments Agency have been told they will be offered jobs at sites in York or Newcastle, but for some employees the fear is they will not be able to make the move.
One worker said it will be particularly hard for people with young children.
“This is a really bitter blow for us,” they said. “Many people have been here for years and don’t want to move. For parents with young children it could add two hours travelling to the working day, and it may mean they can’t move out. Everyone feels really let down.”
A spokesman for the RPA confirmed the decision and said: “We appreciate the decision to leave Alverton Court is disappointing to many of our people.
However, we will do everything possible to ensure a smooth transition for everyone and would stress that this is not about job losses and that we will continue to deliver the same level of service to our customers.
"This decision has not been made lightly and we are working hard to provide as much clarity and certainty to those impacted."
