A CUP winning football team will be in the pink again this season when it plays in a new pastel-coloured strip.

Players at FA Vase holders, Spennymoor Town FC, have swapped last year’s purple away kit for the fans’ choice of powder pink for the 2013-14 season, which kicks off tomorrow. (Saturday, August 10)

Club officials hope the feel good factor the team brought home to County Durham from Wembley in May continues, as the new look inspired them to adopt Cancer Research UK as their chosen charity.

For every away shirt sold a donation will be made to the charity, shirts signed by the squad will be given to relevant fundraising events and the club plans a series of initiatives raising awareness of the cause.

It has also set up a dedicated fundraising webpage - justgiving.com/spennymoortownfc - which clubs and supporters throughout the Northern League will be encouraged to get behind.

Chairman Brad Groves was keen to back the charity as many people connected to the club have been affected by cancer.

His mother, Sarah Groves, was just 50-years-old when she lost her life to the disease in 1987.

He said: “I think just about everyone has been affected by cancer in some shape or form and there are a lot of people within the club who have been, including myself.

“Our fans voted almost unanimously for the pink option and tying it in with a charity was the obvious thing to do.”

Sarah McPhee, a senior local fundraising manager for Cancer Research UK, said: “It makes a huge difference to our work to have the support for Spennymoor town and its football club in particular.

“We are entirely funded by public donation and rely heavily on people’s goodwill and support so this is a fantastic way to raise awareness and funds to carry on our lifesaving research.”

John Davison, owner of shirt sponsors Katem Logistics, which has a bright pink delivery lorry promoting Cancer Research UK and breast cancer awareness, said: “We’ve a great mutual relationship with our local football club.

“We’re proud to be sponsors and they let us hold cancer charity collections at the ground so it is nice they are doing the same this year.”
