A WOMAN appeared before magistrates today (Friday, August 9) accused of pocketing thousands of pounds she claimed would be donated to two North-East charities.
Catherine Heather Airey is alleged to have amassed £4,940 for herself between October 2008 and July 2009 in Crook, County Durham, by pretending she was collecting for the Great North Air Ambulance.
The 55-year-old, of Rossmere, Spennymoor, is also accused of collecting a further £900 from across County Durham, Cleveland and Northumbria on the pretence the money would be donated to Sara’s Hope Foundation, a children’s cancer charity.
This offence is said to have occurred between June and October 2011.
