POLICE have described a clampdown on crime and anti-social behaviour in a town as a success.

They joined firefighters, trading standards officers and Ryedale District Council in a 12-hour operation around Wentworth Street car park, Malton.

PC Terry Triffitt said: "We had a steady flow of people, including people going shopping, residents and farmers at the livestock market.

"We checked a few vehicles for winter driving, made a number of bookings for home safety checks and free smoke alarms, and the speed matrix signs have been up in Pasture Lane and Wheelgate warning motorists to slow down.

"Staff from Ryedale Housing Association have been helping to pick up litter, and trading standards officers handed out advice about doorstep traders.

"The aim was to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour, and all told, it has been a very successful day."

Officials are hoping to hold similar events across the area.
