A SCHOOLGIRL rugby star is charging through the ranks and hoping to catch the eye of England coaches.

From starting to play at the Allertonshire School, Northallerton, Rachel Chadfield was picked up by Thirsk Rugby Club, spotted by Yorkshire and then selected to play for the North of England squad.

And she should hear in the next two months whether she has been successful in her bid to join the England U15s talent development squad.

The second row player is renowned for her power, fierce tackling - and odd socks.

“I try where I can to play in odd socks, it’s become a bit of a ritual,” said the 14-year-old, of Northallerton.

“I do tend to be dominant in the game and love tackling – though I have had one concussion already. I would love to work with the England coaches and hope to play at the highest level.”

She is also just about to start O2 touch rugby where she will be playing against boys.

“I have had a lot of encouragement from my dad, who used to play, my school PE teachers and the coaches at Thirsk Rugby Club,” she said.

PE teacher Eddie Myers added: “Rachel has the skill and determination to succeed at the highest level.

“She is fast and powerful physically but also passionate about the game and mentally tough, all the attributes needed to be a top flight sportswoman.”
