STAFF at a motorway service station are to support two charities in the coming year.

Employees at Roadchef’s Durham Motorway Service Area, off the A1(M) at Bowburn, hope to raise thousands of pounds over the next 12 months.

Roadchef workers held a ballot across the company and voted to support Marie Curie Cancer Care as its national Charity of the Year.

Staff at the County Durham branch also decided to raise additional funds for Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths.

Employees at Bowburn will take part in a series of fundraising activities throughout the year, which will include dedicated collections, a sponsored "wear yellow day" in March to support Marie Curie’s Great Daffodil Appeal, a cycling relay, charity shop challenge, fancy dress days and bake sales.

Chief executive Simon Turl said: "The team at Durham have been heavily involved in the selection process. From a local point of view, we gave everyone the chance to vote for the organisation they most wanted us to donate to, and Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths was the resounding choice."
