A FIREFIGHTER who helped deal with the aftermath of the Chernobyl nuclear accident will visit the region to meet supporters of children affected by disaster.
Vitali Baranovski was among the emergency crews involved in the clean up after the 1986 explosion and fire at the Chernobyl power plant, then in the USSR and now in Ukraine.
He will be the guest of honour at St Paul’s Centre, in Spennymoor, County Durham, to give a presentation with film and photographs on Tuesday, April 23, 2.30pm.
During the talk he will share his story and explain how the emergency workers’ efforts helped prevent a bigger disaster from unfolding in Europe.
He is one of a group speaking throughout Europe, sponsored by the EU and the Association for International Education and Exchange.
Each year parishioners at St Paul’s Church, Whitworth Church and St John’s Church, in Kirk Merrington, pledge to raise £1,000 for the Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline appeal which gives children affected by the disaster a UK holiday.
The event at St Paul’s Centre, in St Paul’s Gardens, Spennymoor is free but donations are welcome. Tickets not necessary.
