AN anonymous benefactor’s £40,000 donation could ensure the survival of dozens of the region’s charities.

The County Durham Community Foundation received the cash on the condition that the identity of the donor is never revealed and the money is used to support community groups and charities in County Durham and Darlington.

The foundation has now teamed up with charity donation website localgiving.com and will use the £40,000 to match fund money donated to groups through the site.

Jane Robson from the foundation said: “The money came from an individual who is very passionate about the area, but who is more interested in benefitting the community rather than gaining any personal recognition.

“We are delighted with their actions and know this money will be a big boost to our charities.”

Almost 100 charities and community groups currently use the localgiving website in County Durham.

The donation will provide match funding for up to £10 a month for a year.

For example, if 10 people agree to donate £10 a month for a year to one charity, that group will receive a further £1,200 from the foundation fund.

Ms Robson said: “These are small organisations and money of that sort can make a big difference to their work.”
