AN elderly man has been left injured and shaken after two burglars forced their way into his home and stole cash.

The 70-year-old victim answered the door at his home in Oak Crescent, Whitburn, South Tyneside, at 9.15pm on Saturday.

He was shocked to be confronted by two men, who forced their way in and made off with cash.

The victim suffered minor head injuries and was treated in hospital before being released.

Acting Detective Inspector Alan Cairns, of Northumbria Police, said: "We would urge anyone who knows anything about this to contact police.

"An elderly and vulnerable man has been left shocked and extremely shaken by this incident.

"Thankfully, incidents like this are rare, however we would remind people to check when answering their door to unexpected callers.

The two offenders are described as male, wearing dark clothing and had covered faces.

Neighbourhood officers will be in the area providing reassurance and anyone who is at all worried can speak to them or call Northumbria Police on 101 ext 69191.
