Heighington villagers vote to pool funds to fight legal cost of fighting Gypsy site plans

VILLAGERS are pooling their money to fight plans to build a Gypsy site near their homes.

Residents of Heighington, near Darlington, voted unanimously at a public meeting tonight (Tuesday, March 12) in favour of collecting money from householders to fund the legal costs of their battle against the scheme.

Sharon Marshall, chair of the meeting, estimated that the community could face costs of around £4,000. A suggested donation of £10 per household was put to those at the packed meeting at St Michael’s Church.

Money raised will be used to battle controversial plans to convert two nearby fields into a private Gypsy site. Any cash left over will be donated to the village hall.

Mrs Marshall said: “You are spending your time here tonight. Let’s follow up your time with being willing to spend some money.

“There is no guarantee that we can change the course of action but if we do not try, we will never know. If this goes through, this will be there for the rest of history.”

Hundreds of objections have already been lodged with Darlington Borough Council over proposals to convert the fields in Walworth Road for two mobile homes, two touring caravans, two amenity buildings, a septic tank and an access road.

Mrs Marshall reminded residents that objections made should be on the grounds of material planning concerns and not personal feelings.

She added: “Object if you believe our community is worth preserving and our countryside is worth preserving for all to enjoy.

"Heighington is quite an inclusive community and we welcome everybody but we all have to abide by the law. There are rules set down by the town council about what is appropriate building work and what is not.”

A steering group has also been set up by residents. The group will take charge of all decision making and research on behalf of the local community and has pledged to report their findings promptly.

Villagers were urged to attend a planning meeting to discuss the proposals on Wednesday April 10 at 1.30pm.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with residents trying to maintain the type of community they have built up over a very long time. Heighington have been recognised nationally for the community spirit they have worked hard at to achieve. While most people believe (with some justification) that no one wants travellers in their back yard people can still object to this development based on arguments based on law. It seems that many , including some of the comments already made in this and other posts do not believe that people can object for any reason, legal or not. That smells of an undemocratic society. No mention is made by these sarcastic commentators of the many times "Travellers" around the country have imposed themselves on unsuspecting communities by moving in illegally and developing sites against, and without planning applications. This community will be changed if this application goes ahead, that is obvious, they should have the support of all law abiding communities and people to use the laws to object to this development.

Lets please bear in mind that this is the Echo, so this story may have been mis-reported to meet what the paper thinks is news and to stir up trouble.

well in my case and many others this simply is not true, its not a case of not in my back yard its a case of not at all !

Until these sections of the "community" start to contribute to society and observe the laws of the land then we should not provide settlements anywhere for them !

This may seem like a sweeping generalization, however i can only go from personal experience and that is the fact that the majority of these people are not paying taxes are not paying national insurance do not tax their vehicles have no insurance and use alternative sources for their fuel which avoid taxes !

Whether travelers or not, anyone doing this and not making a contribution to society should not be given prime green spaces across the country to place their homes.

If they can demonstrate they earn an honest living, pay their taxes and make a contribution then they can purchase their land the same way any of us would have to if we wanted to buy a plot of prime land to put our home on, the honest way !

The issue about the fact that this is a prominent green field site that can be seen from over a mile away from various different locations. If you or I applied to extensively develop this location with 4 static caravans, 4 amenity blocks and 4 touring caravans, it wouldn't be given the time of day. Once the site is there it will be there forever on what was once open countryside with a public footpath across it. There are far more suitable locations that don't destroy our open fields.

do you know what happens when a gypsy site like the one propsed takes root....well in one community down South, all the local children had to leave the primary school through intimidation....and now only the gypsy children attend...the board of governors at that school are now all gypsies. Their reputaion is entirely deserved and I wish the local community good luck and success in their efforts. One gypsy family near me terrorized the estate of predominantly handicapped and elderly where I live, and despite being reported by 20% of the local population, they blatantly defrauded the DWP out of hundreds of thousands of pounds by not notifying cohabitation...they are untouchable !....dont let them take root in your community....and this applies to whoever reads this

I've just come across this story, looking at the plans submitted this 'site' is over a mile from the village in question. As far as I can see the additional traffic from this site will be insignificant due to the additiional access road, not 500 yards away is already hard standing for a number of caravans towards the A1M. Most of Co Durham has a traveller community within a mile or two from it. As for earlier comments regarding Green Field sites, you only have to look in the not too distant past to see many areas in and around Heighington have had permission granted of a smaller nature such as this.

Well said...Although Darlington council will not listen to residents.They seem to love pandering to gypsies..Whoops ! i mean "travelers "...Look if they are travelers, then let them travel. These so called sites they are wanting to build attract nothing but trouble to local communities. Rise in theft and criminal activities. This land is green belt and should stay that way..There are plenty of other sites to put these on. Also remember there will be more than 2 families there by the time their in laws and their in laws and the other brother and his family and the family who are half related through their grandads aunty June's uncles cousins brother arrives to visit....You get the idea don-t you?

No one can escape the fact that areas previously used for traveller sites are badly affected as a result. I have previously lived adjacent to a traveller site and it brought nothing but crime and pollution. These people need to start contributing towards society especially when other decent folk are going without. Best of luck Heighington but I feel your fighting a loosing battle.

Yes I do and u might ask why?? Well because my mother lives on a traveller site in the town (although she isn't a traveller) and i can honestly say until u have lived amongst these people u have no right commenting on how they live there lives!! Think ur all forgetting these are HUMAN beings and have HUMAN rights and also have the right to live like they have done for many many years!! Also might I add have any of u actually stepped foot on a traveller site?? Probably not! Well I'll let u no now they aren't the untidy smelly rat infested places u all think they are, infact there a dam site cleaner than most estates in this town!
