Caravan fire death at Witton Castle

AN investigation is under way after a person died following a fire in a static caravan at Witton Castle Country Park, at Witton-le-Wear, near Bishop Auckland, earlier today.
Durham fire service received a 999 call at 5.45am reporting a car fire at Witton Castle.
A crew from Bishop Auckland was despatched to the scene, and on arrival, fire fighters found a static caravan well alight.
A fire brigade statement said: "The intensity of the fire was such that there had been a complete structural collapse.
"Additional appliances were despatched but despite the fire being extinguished quickly one person was discovered trapped under the collapsed structure and was pronounced dead at the scene."
