A CAR flipped onto its roof after an accident on a busy juction - finally coming to rest on a pedestrian crossing.

The Renault Twingo was involved in a collision with a Vauxhall Insignia at the junction of Albert Road and North Road - near B&Q - in Darlington at 10.30am this morning.

Police are investigating whether one of the cars may have failed to stop at the traffic lights.

The French registered Renault - which was badly damaged on its driver's side - was emerging onto North Road when the accident happened.

It skidded across the junction until it hit the steel barriers protecting the pedestrian crossing and flipped onto its roof. Both back wheels were buckled.

It is understood that no-one was on the crossing at the time.

Police said the Vauxhall estate car was being driven by a man from Cheshire in Darlington on business.

He was taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital suffering from shock.

The front of the 2012 Vauxhall, which was heading up North Road, was badly damaged and both airbags were deployed.

The Twingo driver, a Frenchman believed to be living in the UK, was unhurt.

A section of the road was closed for about an hour.
