A LANDMARK museum is moving, in the hope of attracting more visitors.

Durham University’s Museum of Archaeology will leave Old Fulling Mill, on the banks of the River Wear in Durham City, for new exhibition facilities in Palace Green Library early next year.

Old Fulling Mill is known for being part of what is perhaps the most popular view of Durham Cathedral.

However, it is hidden away from the regular tourist trail.

By contrast, Palace Green Library is within Durham’s World Heritage Site (WHS), between the Cathedral and Castle.

Museum curator Craig Barclay said: “It’s a very exciting opportunity for us. It will allow us to put the treasures of the archaeological collection at the centre of the WHS, so they are accessible for a far larger number of people.”

A new exhibition, titled Out of the Attic, will explore the building’s history, include information about the planned move and ask people’s views on what they would like to see in the new archaeology gallery in Palace Green Library.

Out of the Attic, at Fulling Mill, is open now and runs until Sunday, April 21. Old Fulling Mill Museum will close on June 3. The new archaeology gallery, in the Wolfson Gallery, Palace Green Library, will open early next year.

Old Fulling Mill is open 11.30am to 3.30pm Monday to Friday between November and March and 11am to 4pm daily from April to October. Entry costs £1 for adults, 50p for children aged five to 16 and over 60s and is free for under fives and students. For more information, call 0191-334-1823.
