ALLOTMENTS across Hartlepool have been targeted in a spate of arson attacks.

Fire crews were called to battle serious blazes at allotments in Brierton Lane and Haswell Avenue in the early hours of this morning (Sunday, February 24).

A caravan and three sheds at the Brierton Lane site were completely destroyed by fire, as were seven sheds in Haswell Avenue.

Cleveland Police are investigating and are treating the incidents as arson related.

A force spokesman said: “If you do something like this, we will catch you and you will be dealt with accordingly and you will be prosecuted.”

He also warned the public to be on their guard against arsonists.

He said: “Make sure keep property and possessions locked up and do not leave anything flammable lying around.

"Sometimes, allotments contain things that can ignite fires and it is important not to leave these things where they can be used to help potential arsonists. If you see anything suspicious, contact us.”
