THE seaside town that disgraced DJ Sir Jimmy Savile adopted as his home is continuing its efforts to wipe itself clean of his memory.

Councillors in Scarborough unanimously decided today (Friday, February 22) to strip the late TV and radio personality of his Freedom of the Borough.

It is the first time such a move has ever happened in the resort, where Savile had a flat overlooking the sea for many years.

His name has already been scrubbed from the town’s honours board and his ornate tombstone in the local cemetery has also been removed and reduced to rubble.

Borough councillors have now given their total backing to a motion from council leader Tom Fox that will also see Savile’s name removed from the “registers and accounts” of the authority.

They will also be writing to Prime Minister David Cameron pressing for constitutional changes so that those found guilty of “most heinous conduct” after their death can be stripped of knighthoods and other high honours.

Coun Fox put forward the motion following the publication of the Give Victims a Voice report which concluded that Savile was one of the UK’s most prolific known sexual predators.
