THE sister and fiancée of a former soldier battling leukemia for the second time are showing their support by undertaking a charity challenge.

Lucy Hillary and Sue Smith are climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in east Africa to raise funds for the North-East blood charity, Bright Red.

Mrs Hillary’s brother, Lee Robson, a father-of-two, from Leadgate, near Consett, was diagnosed for the second time after doing a sponsored bike ride for the charity this year.

Mrs Hillary, 26, from Delves Lane, who works alongside him at Consett YMCA, said: “He is not doing so good at the minute. He has been in hospital for a month with a virus in his brain fluid.

“But Bright Red has been a real lifeline for Lee, as well as his friends and family.

“They pump their money into caring for patients and doing research into blood cancer.”

It is hoped a series of charity events in the build up to the mountain challenge next February will raise £5,000.

Miss Smith, 29, said: “If it was not for Bright Red we would feel a bit helpless.

“We cannot do anything for Lee physically, but this allows us to put our energy into something positive not only for him, but other people around the world.” Jumbo Jungle in Consett is holding an event from 4pm-6pm on April 6 with proceeds going towards to cause.

The £7.50 child entry includes two hours play, a cold buffet, an Easter egg hunt, free juice and a free Easter egg for each child.

A community challenge featuring a range of activities is being held on the field behind Tesco at Delves Lane on March 19 from 10am and costs £10 to take part.
