NORTH Yorkshire County Council has confirmed it is to freeze its council tax for the third year in a row.

Members of the council supported a recommendation from the executive today (Wednesday, February 20) to accept a grant equivalent to one per cent council tax rise from the government in return for pegging the council tax at its current level. This amounts to a £2.2m grant for North Yorkshire.

Leader of the council, Councillor John Weighell, said: “We know that many households are struggling financially.

“That is why we are pleased to be able to freeze council tax for the third year in succession. This will have saved the average household £95 over the three years.”

The council is still facing massive cuts – having to find additional savings of about £23m over the next two years on top of a £69m savings programme the authority is already implementing.
