Support to pay energy bills available for families on low incomes

THOUSANDS of households in Darlington are eligible for help with their energy bills, but less than half realise that they qualify for assistance.
The Home Heat Helpline, a free service that helps people on low incomes access grants and rebate scheme, estimates that about 5,000 households around Darlington could be entitled to support.
The organisation carried out research that found only 35 per cent of people had contacted their energy supplier to see if they were entitled to help.
Christine McGourty from the Home Heat Helpline said: “We know that lots of people are looking for ways to reduce their energy bills, and that’s why we want to make sure that everyone gets the help they’re entitled to.
“Energy companies have committed to spending around £250m to help people struggling to pay their fuel bills. But this new survey shows that many simply don’t realise the help is there, so we’re urging consumers to call the Home Heat Helpline so they’re not missing out on the free support that’s available.”
