A MAN has died in a crash on the A1(M) motorway.

The 29-year-old man is understood to have been the driver in a car which crashed through the central reservation barrier on the A1(M) and collided with oncoming traffic.

A 76-year-old man whose vehicle was travelling in the opposite direction was flown to the Great North Air Ambulance to Middlesbrough's James Cook Unviersity Hospital.

He suffered serious injuries to his pelvis and abdomen. His condition on arrival at the hospital was stable.

The accident, reported shortly before 4pm on Sunday, between junction 60 and 61, Bradbury to Bowburn, forced the closure of both sections of the motorway, north and southbound, for a while.
