ANTI-cuts protestors will march through the centre of Newcastle on Saturday (February 16).

Unions and service users are fighting plans by Newcastle City Council and other authorities in the region to axe services to save millions of pounds.

The march , called Stop the Cuts – Save OUR Services. aims to highlight the impact cuts will have on some of the region’s neediest people.

Protestors will assemble at the Centre for Life at noon before marching to Newcastle Civic Centre for 1pm and then to Grey’s Monument for a rally at 1.30pm.

A spokesman for the organisers said: “These cuts come on top of savage attacks to benefits, housing, health and education. “The North- East is disproportionately hit. The march is in direct response to the cuts, and is calling for people to get involved - and also calling on councillors to refuse to implement the cuts.”

Northumbria Police’s Assistant Chief Constable Steve Ashman said: "We're expecting an entirely peaceful and good natured event but we are aware of the potential impact on the local business community and general public and will try to keep disruption to a minimum. “
