A THREE-YEAR-OLD boy had to undergo surgery after being attacked by a Japanese hunting dog.
The incident took place at an address in Cranberry, Coulby Newham, Middlesbrough, at 3.30pm yesterday afternoon.
A spokesman for Cleveland Police said last night that the white and tan Akita was believed to have been a stray.
In attacking the boy, the dog caused serious injury to childs arm, breaking it in the process.
The youngster was taken to James Cook University Hospital in the town. His condition has not been released.
The dog was captured and detained. Its fate is not known.
Akitas are a large dog, bred in Japan from ancient ancestry and used originally as a hunter of deer, wild boar and bears.
They can stand as tall as 27ins high at the shoulder and weigh in at between 75lb and 110lb.
