Middlesbrough man must spend another week in custody after barrister mix-up

A MAN who admits a charge of wounding will spend another week in custody after a mix-up involving his barrister meant he could not be sentenced.

Connor Fairley was due to be sentenced at Teesside Crown Court for unlawfully wounding Skye Cochrane in September last year.

But while 20-year-old Fairley was being produced for his court appearance in Middlesbrough, his barrister was on another case in Newcastle.

Judge Howard Crowson was told that the defendant's legal team were wrongly under the impression that the case was being heard in a week's time.

The judge described it as "genuine misunderstanding" and said he could not hear the case without listening to representations on Fairley's behalf.

Judge Crowson apologised to the defendant, who is in custody, for the inconvenience.

Fairley, of Ranksborough Street, Seaham, County Durham, was remanded in custody. The case will be heard again on Monday.
