A MAN was airlifted to hospital with serious head and body injuries on Saturday afternoon following a four car collision near Beamish, County Durham.

Two fire crews from High Handenhold, one from Durham and a special rescue unit from Bishop Auckland attended the crash on the A693 shortly before noon.

One 45-year-old man, who lives locally, had to be freed from the wreckage of his car and was flown to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle by the Great North Air Ambulance.

 

He suffered head, chest, leg, pelvic and arm injuries. His condition was described as serious but stable.
