ANYONE checking who netted the goals in Hartlepool's victory over Notts County may well have found themselves doing a double-take.

And they weren't alone - football fans around the globe  had a chuckle at this one.

That's because the scorers in Hartlepool's 2-1 defeat of Notts County were the aptly named Peter HARTLEY and James POOLE.

Both were on target in the match on Saturday, at Hartlepool's Victoria Park.

Bookmakers William Hill said they would have offered 100-1 for anyone betting on both to score.

The two goalscorers made headlines across the globe, with newspapers in Australia reporting the story, while social network Twitter was also abuzz with the news.

Hartlepool born Hartley, 24, whose second-half header followed Poole's fifth minute opener, said: “I didn’t realise how much coverage we would get from this, but  James realised straight away.

“Some people didn’t even realise it was me who scored – they thought it was Simon Walton.

"We just need to discuss getting a cut of things for our image rights now."

He added: "I was in a world of my own after scoring.

“I knew my header was over the line, but I was on edge looking at the linesman to see if he would give it after it was cleared."

Pools boss John Hughes joked: “Hartley and Poole scored and we are getting that good we can pick our goalscorers!"

The rare win for the home side followed seven success defeats at the Vic for bottom of the table Hartlepool.

Poole, 22, whose goal was a deft volley, added: “It was really in the dressing room when we all realised what it meant.

“We’ve had the jokes and people have pointed it out since I first signed for the club  – but it’s good fun and all good for the club as well.

"I suppose it’s the first time something like this has happened in football.

"It’s a bit like the old East Fife 5 Forfar 4 result in Scotland that everyone talks about isn’t it!’’
