A SERIES of classes are being set up which aim to help older people improve their balance and avoid falls.
Age UK is running “Staying Steady” classes in a bid to help older age groups improve their balance and posture.
By doing so, people can lessen their risk of tripping or falling, helping continue their independence and maintain a full social life.
The classes cover Thirsk, Northallerton and the Leyburn and Richmond area and cost £3 per week, including refreshments. The classes follow research which shows people who take part in balance and strength groups are significantly less likely to fall.
NHS statistics show about 30 per cent of adults over 65 will experience at least one fall a year. This rises to 50 per cent of adults over 80.
There are also new gentle seated exercise classes at Hutton Bonville Parish Hall every Thursday between 2pm and 3pm.
T’ai Chi classes also begin at Northallerton Catholic Church Hall on Thirsk Road from Wednesday, February 20 at 12.30pm. T’ai Chi can reduce stress, improve balance and general mobility and increase muscle strength in the legs.
There are also dance-based classes continuing in the Hambleton and Richmondshire areas for older people, including Zumba Gold sessions at Northallerton, Richmond and Leyburn and line dancing at Leyburn.
For more details of any of the classes, contact Lesley Williams at Age UK Northallerton on 01609-771624.
