Russian ballet comes to Darlington

THE stars of an international ballet company have arrived in the North-East for a series of performances.

The Russian State Ballet of Siberia, joined by the Orchestra of Siberia, has returned to Darlington’s Civic Theatre to perform three different classic ballets over four days.

The company made their first appearance last night (Thursday, January 31) with a performance of La Fille Mall Gardee and will continue tonight at 7.30pm(Friday) with Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake.

The ballet will continue with The Nutcracker, which features matinee performances at 2.30pm on Saturday and Sunday, and Saturday at 7.30pm.

Formed in 1981, the Russian State Ballet of Siberia is one of Russia’s leading ballet companies and has built an international reputation.

A spokeswoman said: “The soloists and corps de ballet are superb, and never fail to delight audiences with their breathtaking physical ability and dazzling costumes.”

Tickets priced between £26 and £33 for each show are available from the theatre box office on 01325-486555 or at darlingtonarts.co.uk

Whilst the overall performance of last nights La Fille was beautiful and there canbe no doubt about physical ability I disagree that the costumes were dazzling. I alos found the clog dance to be somewhat lack lustre. The performance was also spoilt by the incessant buzzing from the gantry lights to the point of my approaching the theatre duty manager.
However I did start with a laugh when I spotted a male dancer complete with white tights, leg warmers and slippers having a pre performace cigarette next to the box office !
