THREE of the region’s councillors have been shortlisted for national awards.

The trio are in the running for 2013 C’llr (CORR) Achievement Awards.

Now in their fourth year, the awards received a record-breaking number of entries this year.

Sixty-three councillors have made it to the shortlists for the 11 honours and the winners will be announced on Monday, February 25.

Communities Secretary Eric Pickles will be the keynote speaker at the ceremony.

From this region, North Yorkshire County Council’s older person’s champion Shelagh Marshall, a Conservative representing Mid Craven, is in the running for the Age UK award.

David Harrington, an independent member for Ingleby Barwick West ward on Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council and cabinet member for corporate management and finance, has been shortlisted for the Online Councillor of the Year award.

His fellow Stockton cabinet member David Rose, who holds the environment portfolio and is a Labour councillor for Parkfield and Oxbridge, is up for the Sustainability Champion of the Year honour.

Jonathan Carr-West, acting chief executive of the Local Government Information Unit think tank, said: “We are delighted the C’llr Achievement Awards have attracted such an outstanding number of entries and we have been incredibly impressed by the quality of the nominations received.

“This stands as a testament to the hard work and innovation of many councillors.

“Councillors can often represent the unsung heroes of their community so the awards provide a fantastic chance to celebrate their achievements.”
